How to Enjoy Your First Experience at a Massage Spa

If the thought of getting a spa treatment is nerve-wracking for you, you’re one of many. Several people’s first spa experience is through a gift card. For some people, this spa visit never happens because they’re anxious about what could possibly transpire and being clueless about spa etiquette essentials.

But just relax. The most common concern is taking off your clothes when getting a massage. Truth is, good spas follow strict draping protocols when providing massage treatments to their clients. The only part of your body that will be exposed, is the one the therapist is working on. The rest will be unexposed (you will be given a large towel or blanket). As well, you don’t have to remove your clothes for certain treatments such as reflexology.

And you don’t need to worry about what you should or should not do as someone will be there to assist you during your visit.

Selecting a Spa

Most of us select a spa depending on what’s convenient to us – located nearby, costs cheap, etc. However, several other factors must also be considered, such as the qualifications of the therapists. In fact, if there’s a spa that is much cheaper than the others, this may be a sign that their therapists are not licensed.

The demeanor of the staff should be considered too, and you can test it with a single call. If they’re rude or unprofessional, forget it. And upon arriving at the spa, you should be met with a quiet and sanitary environment, with the addition of soothing aromas, dim lights, and smooth, relaxing music.

If you want to be familiar with a spa before booking, just ask them for a quick tour. In most cases, they would be happy to oblige. As you book e an appointment, inform them that it’s your first time. Knowing this, they should have more patience answering all of your questions. Most likely, they are going to have some questions for you as well, like whether you would like your therapist to be male or female.

Just Before You Go

Don’t get a massage on a full stomach because you’ll probably keep passing gas. To maximize the benefits of the treatment, drink lots of water after.

Communicating with Your Therapist

Lastly, don’t be shy to give feedback to your therapist during the massage. For example, if you want heavier pressure, tell them so they can adjust the pressure until you think it’s fine. If you want to have a little chat or none at all, they will take your cue. It’s really all about you and what you want, so take it easy and just enjoy.
